Miguel R. Rivera, Sr. has been named Division Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Payless ShoeSource, Inc., which is a business unit of Collective Brands, Inc. In this new role, Mr. Rivera is part of the senior leadership team.
Mr. Rivera joined Collective Brands, Inc., as Vice-President – Deputy General Counsel in October 2011. In that role, he was responsible for managing the Labor and Employment, Compensation and Benefits, Litigation, Corporate, Corporate Governance, Intellectual Property, and Administrative functions. Mr. Rivera reported directly to the President and Chief Executive Officer of Collective Brands, Michael Massey – who currently serves as Collective Brand’s General Counsel and Corporate Secretary.
Mr. Rivera joined Collective Brands from Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., where he served as an in-house attorney in several capacities, namely legal manager of outside counsel managment in the Walmart Legal Department, over a five-year period. Most recently he served as Associate General Counsel – Team Leader and was responsible for managing a team of seven legal professionals and attorneys who managed Walmart’s
litigation in 17 states. Mr. Rivera was directly responsible for
managing Walmart’s product liability cases nationally.
Mr. Rivera served as the Commissioner of Labor for the State of Indiana, as Senior Counsel for Global Litigation at Cummins, Inc., as Vice Chairman of the Indiana Parole Board, as Deputy Attorney General for the State of Indiana, and was engaged in the private practice of law in Indiana since 1990.
Mr. Rivera obtained his A.A.S. degree in History, from Illinois Central College, his Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics, Ethics, and Religious Studies from the University of Illinois, and his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Illinois College of Law. Mr. Rivera is licensed in the State and Federal Courts of Indiana and plans to get his Kansas license in the summer of 2012.
Mr. Rivera is married to Nancy Rivera and has four children: Gabrielle, Trevor, Alexia and Miguel, Jr. Mr. Rivera enjoys Formula 1 racing, bicycling, reading, and spending time with his family.
